Description

A graceful woodland perennial with clouds of creamy-white flowers

Goat’s Beard brings a soft, almost ethereal quality to the garden. Its tall, airy sprays of tiny cream-white flowers rise above deeply divided green foliage, creating a beautiful contrast of texture and light.

It is particularly beautiful in woodland gardens, shaded borders, and naturalistic plantings, where it can mingle with ferns, hostas, and other shade-loving perennials.

Light: Goat’s Beard is especially well suited to partial shade and woodland conditions. It appreciates protection from strong afternoon sun, particularly in warmer climates. University of Minnesota Extension

Water: Keep the soil reasonably moist, especially while the plant is becoming established. Plants growing beneath mature trees may need additional water because tree roots compete for moisture. University of Minnesota Extension

Where It Shines

Goat’s Beard is at its best when allowed to grow naturally in large, graceful drifts rather than as a single specimen. Its height makes it wonderful toward the back of a woodland border, while its feathery flowers soften the heavier foliage of hostas and other shade plants.

Beautiful companions:

Ferns · Hostas · Heuchera · Astilbe · Woodland Groundcovers · Hellebores

Garden Note

Goat’s Beard is one of those plants that makes a shaded garden feel lighter. Its airy white flower plumes seem to float above the foliage, catching the dappled light beneath the trees.

Softness beneath the trees.
